What to Expect
Your First Acupuncture Visit
Never tried acupuncture before? You're in the right place.
At Local Wellness Clinic, we’re here to make your first experience with acupuncture clear, calm, and supportive — no needles until you’re ready, and all your questions are welcome.
Acupuncture is a traditional healing practice that uses very fine, sterile needles inserted into specific points on the body. These points help regulate how energy (or "qi") flows through your body, supporting natural healing, relieving pain, calming the nervous system, and improving many physical and emotional symptoms.
What to Expect During Your First Visit
-
Intake & Conversation (20–30 minutes)
We'll sit down and talk about your health history, concerns, sleep, digestion, mood, and lifestyle. This helps us understand how your body is functioning from a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective. -
Tongue & Pulse Check
We’ll look at your tongue and feel your pulse — two tools we use in TCM to understand your internal state. -
Your First Acupuncture Treatment (30–45 minutes)
Once you’re lying comfortably on a treatment table, we’ll gently insert very thin needles into carefully chosen points. You may feel a tiny pinch or dull sensation — but most people barely feel a thing. Many find it deeply relaxing. -
Post-Treatment Rest
We’ll let you rest with the needles in for 20–30 minutes. It’s common to feel calm, floaty, or sleepy — all signs your body is shifting into a healing state.
How to Prepare
-
Eat something light 1–2 hours before your session — an empty or overly full stomach can make you feel dizzy or uncomfortable.
-
Hydrate — water helps your body process the treatment.
-
Wear loose, comfortable clothing — like joggers or leggings. We may need access to your lower legs, arms, back, or abdomen.
-
Skip caffeine or alcohol if possible — these can affect how your body responds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does acupuncture hurt?
Not really! Most people feel little to nothing when needles are inserted — maybe a small pinch, warmth, or pressure. The needles are hair-thin and nothing like a syringe.
What are those needles doing?
They're helping regulate your body's nervous system, blood flow, and energy pathways (called meridians). It’s like giving your body a gentle reminder to return to balance.
What does acupuncture treat?
It can help with:
-
Stress, anxiety, and burnout
-
Poor sleep or fatigue
-
Headaches and migraines
-
Menstrual or hormonal issues
-
Pain (neck, back, joints, etc.)
-
Digestion or bloating
-
Fertility and menstrual support
…and much more. Even if you're just feeling "off," acupuncture may help.
Is it safe?
Yes. We use sterile, single-use needles, and our licensed acupuncturists are trained in both Traditional Chinese Medicine and anatomy. We always work gently and professionally.
How will I feel afterward?
Most people feel relaxed, calm, and “lighter.” Occasionally you might feel a bit tired — this is normal and should pass quickly. Drink water, eat something nourishing, and take it easy after your first visit.
How often should I come?
That depends on what you’re working on. Some things shift in 1–2 treatments, while others need weekly care for a few weeks. We'll go over your personal plan together.
What’s the deal with the tongue and pulse check?
In TCM, your tongue and pulse offer clues about what's going on inside — kind of like reading a weather report for your body. It’s non-invasive and totally painless.
How long is an acupuncture appointment?
Your first visit is usually 60–75 minutes to allow time for a full intake and treatment. Follow-up sessions are typically 45–60 minutes.
Will I bleed or bruise?
Sometimes a small spot of blood or a tiny bruise can occur at the needle site, especially in sensitive areas — but it’s rare and harmless. Most people don’t notice anything.
Do I need to believe in it for it to work?
Nope. Acupuncture isn’t a placebo — it affects your nervous system, circulation, and muscle tone in measurable ways. Many skeptics become regulars after their first session.
What if I’m scared of needles?
Totally valid — and we can go slow. The needles are super fine (about the width of a hair), and we’ll check in with you often. If you’re very needle-sensitive, we can adjust your treatment or use other techniques like acupressure, cupping, or ear seeds.
Can I get acupuncture while pregnant?
Yes — and it can be incredibly supportive for pregnancy-related issues like nausea, fatigue, or back pain. Our acupuncturists are trained in safe prenatal care and know which points to avoid.
How do I know it’s working?
Some people feel better after one session. For others, the effects build gradually — improved sleep, digestion, mood, or reduced pain. We’ll track your progress together and adjust as needed.
Is it okay to get acupuncture during my period?
Absolutely. It can actually help ease cramps, regulate cycles, and reduce PMS symptoms. There's no need to reschedule.
