What Is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy (or physical therapy) is all about restoring movement and reducing pain. We assess how your body moves, uncover what’s limiting or hurting, and guide you through treatments and exercises that help you recover and stay strong long-term.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment
-
Conversation & History (15–20 minutes)
We'll talk about your symptoms, lifestyle, work or sport demands, and medical history to get the full picture. -
Movement Assessment (20–30 minutes)
Your physiotherapist will guide you through gentle movements, muscle strength tests, and functional tasks to assess what’s happening and why. -
Hands-On Treatment
This may include soft tissue release, joint mobilization, dry needling (if appropriate), stretching, or guided exercises. -
Personalized Home Plan
You'll leave with a clear understanding of what’s going on — and a custom plan to work on at home. Think stretches, mobility drills, strengthening exercises, and practical tips for your day-to-day.

How to Prepare
-
Wear flexible, comfortable clothing — think leggings, joggers, or shorts and a t-shirt or tank top.
-
Bring any imaging or reports (if applicable) — like X-rays, MRIs, or doctor notes.
-
Be ready to move — your physiotherapist will likely want to see how you walk, squat, reach, or lift.

Physiotherapy FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first visit
Whether you're new to physiotherapy or exploring specialized care like dry needling or pelvic floor therapy, we're here to guide you every step of the way.

Getting Started
Do I need a referral?
No — you can book directly with us. Some insurance providers may request one for reimbursement, so it’s worth checking your plan.

Is physiotherapy covered by insurance?
Yes, most extended health plans cover it. We offer direct billing to major insurers to make things easier for you.

What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear loose, stretchy clothing that allows movement. If we’re assessing a specific area (e.g., shoulder, knee), it helps to wear a tank top or shorts.

Can I bring someone with me?
Absolutely. You're welcome to bring a partner, friend, or support person — especially if you feel more comfortable that way.

Will I get treatment during my first visit?
Yes! We’ll do a thorough assessment and usually begin hands-on treatment and/or exercise the same day.

What if I’m in a lot of pain — can I still come?
Yes. We’ll work gently, within your limits, and adjust everything to keep you safe and comfortable.

How many sessions will I need?
It varies. Some conditions improve in a few sessions, while others may require more ongoing care. We’ll outline a clear treatment plan at your first visit.

How often should I come?
Your physiotherapist will tailor your schedule based on your condition, goals, and how your body responds. You may start with weekly visits and adjust from there.

What’s the difference between physio and chiropractic care?
Physiotherapy focuses on restoring movement through hands-on treatment, exercise, and education. Chiropractic often focuses on spinal adjustments and alignment.

Do I need to be athletic or active to go to physio?
Not at all. Physiotherapy is for everyone — from athletes to desk workers, seniors to new parents.

What to Expect
What happens during an assessment?
-
We’ll chat about your symptoms, goals, and history.
-
You'll go through a movement assessment.
-
Your therapist will explain the findings and begin treatment.
-
You'll receive a personalized plan — including stretches, mobility work, strengthening, and lifestyle tips.

Will physiotherapy hurt?
Some discomfort is possible during treatment or exercise, especially when addressing tight or injured areas — but you should never feel unsafe. We prioritize your comfort.

Will I only get exercises and be sent home?
Nope! Treatment usually includes a mix of hands-on therapy, education, and tailored exercises. We’ll support you through every step.

What if I forget how to do my exercises?
We’ll send clear instructions and videos if needed. You can always ask for a refresher.

Can I combine physiotherapy with other treatments?
Yes! Many of our clients combine physio with acupuncture, massage therapy, or wellness services like infrared sauna or red light therapy.

Dry Needling
What is dry needling?
Dry needling uses fine, sterile needles to release tight, painful muscle knots (trigger points). It helps improve mobility, reduce pain, and promote healing.

Is it the same as acupuncture?
No. Dry needling is based on Western medicine and targets muscles and connective tissue. Acupuncture comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine and focuses on energy flow.

Does dry needling hurt?
You may feel a twitch or deep ache briefly, but it’s usually followed by relief and improved mobility. We’ll guide you through the process and adjust as needed.

What can dry needling help with?
-
Muscle tightness
-
Sports injuries
-
Headaches and jaw pain (TMJ)
-
Neck and back tension
-
Tendon pain (e.g. rotator cuff, Achilles)

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy & Incontinence
What is pelvic floor physiotherapy?
It focuses on the muscles that support your bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs — key for continence, posture, and core strength.

Is this just for postpartum people?
No — pelvic floor physio is for everyone, including men, older adults, and people with pelvic pain, incontinence, or constipation.

Can it help with bladder leaks?
Yes. Whether you experience leaks when sneezing, laughing, or exercising — or have sudden urges — pelvic physio helps strengthen and retrain your muscles.

Will the therapist do an internal exam?
Internal exams help assess the pelvic floor directly, but they’re always optional. Your therapist will explain everything, get your consent, and make sure you’re fully comfortable.

What conditions does pelvic physio treat?
-
Urinary incontinence
-
Pelvic pain or pressure
-
Pain during sex
-
Postpartum core issues (e.g. diastasis recti)
-
Constipation
-
Pre- and postnatal rehab

Is pelvic floor physio covered by insurance?
Yes — it’s billed as standard physiotherapy under most extended health plans.
